Principal's Message

June 30, 2020

Hello from Mr. Laird's desk,

I would like to start by introducing myself to those I have not already had the chance to meet in person.  I have had the pleasure of being a middle school administrator for the past ten years in our school district, and before that, I worked as an alternate school teacher and as a high-school classroom teacher.  I am a learner, first and foremost, recently completing UBC's Transformative Educational Leadership Program and the two-year Harvard Certificate in Advanced Educational Leadership (Graduate School of Education).  I am continuing my professional learning, currently learning as part of the Harvard Certificate in School Management and Leadership (CSML) program (Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Business school).  I am involved with the BCPVPA (BC Principals and Vice Principals Association) as one of our district's professional development representatives, and am involved with leading learning in our school district on multiple levels.  And provincially, Mr. Ward and I were selected to share our learning journey opening Canyon Falls provincially at the 2019 Fall BCSSA (British Columbia School Superintendents Association) conference in November, 2019.  As the principal of Canyon Falls Middle School, being a lead learner in our new school community is vitally important to me.

Canyon Falls Middle School has become something very special, not just in appearances and middle school programming, but in the powerful learning environment that has been created and nurtured by our staff, learners, and greater community.  I encourage you to peruse the resources section on our website for research regarding new approaches to learning.  I have been curating this collection, adding information constantly, and engaging with our whole learning community about the possibilities that exist here for our children.

I am grateful to the Mission community for welcoming me and our school community so warmly to their zone.  This last year, I had the pleasure of meeting with families from all our feeders and beyond, and I am thrilled with how caring, engaged, and supportive they have been in the opening year of Canyon Falls Middle School.  The last few months have been exciting and challenging all at the same time.  Between the tight opening schedule, through to creating and growing a thriving learning community, and into the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis, this has been a year for the ages.  From a principal perspective, I could not be prouder of my learners, their families, and my staff for the grace and care that went into every step along the way.  I am looking forward to 2020-2021, and all the future holds.  September will come soon, and I could not imagine a more excited, motivated, and talented staff to engage your children.  Great things will continue to happen here!

And lastly, I always want to ensure that I am readily available to those I serve.  No problem is too small, and unless things are brought to my attention, I cannot possibly address them.  Please do not hesitate to contact me by email (jim.laird@sd23.bc.ca) or by phone (250-870-5123) and I promise to get back to you.

Mr. Jim Laird
